Blackout, Semi-Blackout or Screen? Choosing the Right Made-to-Measure Roller Blind

A made-to-measure roller blind is one of the simplest ways to control light and privacy in a room. Choosing one comes down to two decisions: the fabric and where you mount it. This guide helps you get both right the first time.

1. Choose the fabric by room

Blackout – for bedrooms and nurseries

Blackout fabric blocks light almost completely. It is the right choice where you sleep, for shift workers, and for rooms with a TV or projector. A blind mounted outside the recess, overlapping the opening, gives the darkest result because less light slips around the edges.

Semi-blackout – for living rooms and kitchens

Semi-blackout softens the light and gives privacy without turning the room dark. It is the most versatile option for living areas.

Screen (sunscreen) – for offices and sunny windows

Screen fabric filters glare and UV while you can still see outside. It is ideal for home offices, south-facing windows and anywhere you want to keep the view.

2. Inside or outside the recess?

  • Inside the recess: a clean, built-in look. Measure the width and height of the opening in three places and keep the smallest value. Enter the opening size in the configurator: we apply the fitting deduction for you.
  • Outside the recess: fixed to the wall or frame above the window. Best for maximum darkness and for recesses that are too shallow. Enter the exact size you want the blind to be, usually a few centimetres wider and taller than the opening on each side.

3. Check the details before ordering

  • Recess depth: make sure there is room for the roller and brackets if you mount inside.
  • Handles and obstacles: the blind must roll down without touching them.
  • Chain side: choose the side that is easiest to reach.
